About Us
We are two sisters, Edna and Georgia, who decided a few years ago that it just made sense to live together when we retired. Well, that decision was activated a bit early. Edna is retired and Georgia is still working… but not for much longer. She’s getting very near that magical age when you finally have the time to do all the things you’ve put off for your entire life.
Together, we found a piece of land with a suitable house, a usable barn and a kennel, of all things! It was 2-1/2 acres of rural bliss…. and Australian pines.
For all you non-Floridians who are reading this, Australian pine in Florida is like the ragweed and goldenrod in Kentucky and Ohio… or the kudzu in so many of our southern states. In other words, Australian pines are weeds. Huge, 80 ft tall trees with worthless trunks, but weeds all the same. They break with the least bit of wind and then the stupid things just grow back. They reproduce with underground runners and they absolutely adore our steamy hot summers.
Dad helped out with the Australian pine problem… and then we had 2-1/2 acres of mostly bare sand. Sigh! Some days you just can’t win.
I’m happy to say that we have somehow managed to convert the sand to a pretty decent pasture. The old steel extra-heavy-duty carport has been remodeled somewhat and it is now a pretty decent barn for our Boer goats. The kennel is still at least partially a kennel since we have our Rotties living there. We also use it for feed storage.
We’ve added chickens and rabbits to our livestock so that we now produce most of our own meat and eggs. The goal is to produce virtually all our own food by the time Georgia retires. We’re almost there.
Unfortunately, we have come to realize what so many retirees learn: the good old Social Security check just won’t stretch to cover all our living expenses.
And so, the idea of our little farm has expanded to include yet another goal: to bring in enough extra money to fill the gap between Social Security and reality.
Hence, this web site. We are Two Sisters who started our little farm with Two Rottweiler Sisters, Two Goat Sisters and Two Rabbit Sisters. I’m not sure about the sisterhood of the chickens, but I’m pretty sure there were Two Chicken Sisters in that group we started with.
Being the eldest Sister, I get to be the one who posts on this blog. I’m not sure if that’s an honor or something other, but I’ll do it. Hopefully on a regular basis, but I’m not promising.
